What is the Gospel?
Good News, Not Advice
Let’s be honest - the word gospel can get thrown around so much that we lose its meaning. Simply put, the gospel means good news. Christianity isn’t mainly about what we do for God. It’s about what God has done for us in Jesus. At the center of the gospel is an announcement: God has come to meet us right where we are.
The Ruler
“In the beginning, God…” (Genesis 1:1)
God created everything, and He created us to know Him, love Him, and walk with Him. He is not distant or cold—He is a God of love, existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We were made by God and for God. Which means the life we’re all searching for - meaning, joy, purpose - is ultimately found in Him.
The Revolt
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) But instead of trusting God, we’ve all gone our own way. The Bible calls this sin. It’s not just what we do - it’s what’s going on in our hearts. We’ve chosen ourselves over God.
“Your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God.” (Isaiah 59:2) That separation is real. On our own, we can’t fix it. And because God is just, sin leads to judgment: “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27)
The Rescue
“But God, being rich in mercy…” (Ephesians 2:4–5)
Here’s where the good news comes in. God didn’t leave us in our sin. About 2,000 years ago, He stepped into our world in the person of Jesus. He lived the life we couldn’t live - perfect, faithful, without sin - and then He went to the cross in our place.
“God made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21) On the cross, Jesus took our sin and gave us His righteousness. He was treated as if He lived our life, so we could be treated as if we lived His. He was buried—and three days later, He rose again:
“He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.” (Romans 4:25)
The resurrection means this is all true. Sin is paid for. Death is defeated. New life is available.
A New Life & Future Hope
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
When we trust in Jesus, we’re not just forgiven - we’re made new. God welcomes us into a real relationship with Him. He walks with us now and gives us His Spirit. And this isn’t the end of the story.
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth…” (Revelation 21:1)
One day, Jesus will make all things new. No more sin, no more suffering—just life with Him forever in a restored world.
Our Response
“Repent and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15)
The gospel invites a response. We turn from our sin, and we trust in Jesus—not just knowing about Him, but relying on Him completely. This isn’t a cold transaction. It’s the beginning of a relationship. It’s trusting that Jesus is who He says He is, and that what He’s done is enough.
The Invitation
“Now is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:2)
This is the greatest news in the world—and it’s for you. Wherever you’re coming from, whatever your story is, Jesus meets you there. And He invites you into something new: forgiveness, life, and a restored relationship with God.
This is the greatest story ever told—and anybody can get in on it.
